Wednesday, hump day as some people called it, but it was still only 7am, the hump has not yet begun to rise. The young woman rolled over in her sheets, opening her eyes slightly to see the time on the alarm clock that was now ringing in her ears, she hated the damn thing, but it was the only way she would get up in the morning. She hit the snooze button and sat herself up, stretching her arms above her head and yawning quite loudly. She rubbed her eyes and looked to the window, there were rays of light coming through the crack of her curtains. Well that was something she thought, it was going to be a nice day. Maybe there would be no accidents today, no people trying to kill themselves, no shooting, that one she laughed at, there were always shootings.

Monique pulled back the sheets and walked her half naked self to the bathroom, where she stripped off the very few clothes she wore to bed and let them rest on the floor, she turned on the water letting it her up before she stepped into the shower, washing herself and letting her face run under the water, waking her up and washing the sleep from her eyes. After her shower, she returned to her bedroom and found the clothes that would wear to work that day, hump day. After dressing she walked out to the kitchen and made herself jam on toast. What time was it, she thought suddenly not having looked at a clock since her rude awakening, she looked towards the microwave and seen the time lit up as 8:15am, she had fifteen minutes to get to work, she quickly finished her toast and grabbed up her hand bag and ran for the door, pushing the button and locking it on her way out. It didn't take her long to get to work, usually only about five minutes, so she wasn't really that worried.

She parked her car in the special staff parking lot and climbed out and walked towards the Desert Springs Hospital, where she was the head of the Emergency Department, she signed her time sheet and went into her office, where she put down her bag and looked at the days roster. There were three doctors here today and five nurses including the nurcing unit manager or NUM as she was more commonly known. Monique didn't really get on with the NUM, but this was a work environment and there were often times when you didn't like someone you worked with. She removed the thoughts from her mind and back to work, just at that moment, one of the nurses came into the room, he looked a little worn out and spoke rather quickly. "We have an MVA, there are 5 casualties, 3 with serious wounds 2 walking" he looked at Monique for a statement, she nodded her head and walked rather quickly from the room. Monique stood up and headed out into her department, it wouldn't be the quite day she had hoped for.

Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. This was the only thought running through Carlisle's mind as he sat on the operating table, a blood soaked towel held to his arm. Another drug deal gone awry, at least this time he was the only one who had gotten hurt. He was sure that the bullet had passed straight through his arm, and that there wasn't going to be too much damage but it hurt like hell and bled like crazy.

It wasn't the first time Carlisle had been shot on the job-- it was how he had met Dr. Monique Dering. She had taken care of him during his early days, when he had more accidents than good investments and she took care of him now, when he had these few and far between mistakes. It had been a mistake to assume that the diminutive Miss Yolanda Potter didn't carry a gun but it was a mistake he wouldn't make again. She had threatened him, threatening to shoot him if he didn't supply her with drugs again... something that she couldn't afford. Carlisle cut her off when she stopped paying and that was something she couldn't handle.

It wasn't as if Carlisle was trying to ruin her life. But they had an agreement. Money would buy her drugs. No money, no go. He had offered another plan of business, one that would require her to pay him back for his generosity at a later date, with interest. Obviously, she had refused with an attitude. He saw his preferred doctor glide down the hallway, a determined look upon her face and he looked up at the nurse trying to attend to the difficult man. "That's her. Get her in here, please." The nurse looked at him with surprise and disbelief. She chuckled and responded that Dr. Dering didn't see cases like his and he needed to calm down and let her do her job. "Dammit, Nurse Lowen! Get her in here now! Tell her my name, I swear she'll see me." Carlisle snapped, his eyes icy and fierce.

It was doubtless that Nurse Lowen had heard the rumors about him, that he was not Alejandro di Marco, and it was obvious that she was frightened by him. Carlisle wondered if she knew that he was really the biggest mob boss on their side of the United States. His eyes narrowed in pain as he applied pressure to the wound. "Now." The black nurse hesitated and looked out the window at Dr. Dering. "NOW!" He shouted, his eyes closed tight as his head swam from the pain. He had refused painkillers unless they were administered by Dr. Dering. Only she knew of his condition and any side effects that the drugs could have with the daily prescriptions that controlled his disorder.

Dammit Dammit Dammit.

So much for the quite day she had been hoping for, a MVA so early in the morning. She frowned as she followed the nurse into the emergency department where there would be many patients waited for treatment. She walked down the long corridor there were doors on each side of the hall, suddenly she heard a familier voice, it was him, mr Alejandro di Marco as he liked to call himself, she smiled as she infact knew that his not was not Alejandro di Marco but Carlisle De Costa the biggest mob boss in Las Vegas. Most people would be scared of this man, scared of what he could do to them. She heard him snapping at the young nurse tending to him, what had he done to himself this time. Monique walked up to the door and grinned "its ok miss Lowen, ill take care of this" Monique waved the young woman away and walked up to Carlisle. "What have you done to yourself" she asked the man lying in the bed.

Monique wheeled the trolly into one of the cubicles where they would have a little more privacy. "What has happened to you" she asked again, looking at the wound on the mans body. she grabbed some more gauze from the shelves in the room and swapped them for the bloody ones on the mans body. The wound was not as bad as some of the others he had sustained doing his work, there were gun wounds, stabbings and who knows what else, he always got himself into trouble in his line of work. She remembered times she had worked on the man before, she had dug out bullets from wounds, stitched up stab wounds. After she had worked on him once and got to know the man behind the many masks he wore, she was the only one who he would let work on him, she was very flattered that he trusted her so much, but he was in here alot and sometimes pulled her away from other work, like today. She didn't mind too much, as she liked to help out where she could, but he could come in a little less.

She smiled, it would always be the same. He would always come in when she was at her busiest and she would stop what she was doing and help him out. She turned her attention back to the man lying on the bed, he seemed to have calmed down quite alot to when she first came from the hallway and seen him arguing with the nurse. "Now" she said "what happened to you today, a gun wound, stabbing or something totally different." she applied more pressure to the wound, there was still blood pumping out, and she was worried that maybe he was loosing to much blood, she grabbed some more of the gauze and placed it on top of the wound soaking up the blood still soaking through. She wondered if he would have to go to surgery, there would be a long wait today, with the 5 people coming in.

Carlisle sighed with relief as Dr. Dering came in, his blood pressure dropping significantly. She knew how to take care of him, unlike those simpering idiots that they had for nurses. She tsked with disapproval as she exchanged the gauze and she asked him what he had done to himself. He had done nothing. It was what Lorenzo had done that had gotten him shot. The idiot. Carlisle was beginning to wonder how many more of his mistakes he could take before he ended up dead. He winced as Monique swapped out the bloody towel for medical gauze and he gasped as she looked at it.

"Not... my.... fault." He gasped, fighting through the pain. His head was swimming from blood loss but he fought through the sweeping sensation of light-headedness to give her the account of what happened. "Lor..enzo. Underestimated a...client. Shot at close... range." He murmured, squeezing his eyes closed and hissing as she applied antiseptic. "I'm pretty sure... the bullet passed... straight through." He answered to her repeated questions. He felt woozy, but he knew she needed a good report of what happened to better treat him. But this time, it really wasn't his fault.

"Goddammit all." He muttered, the pain ripping through his arm. "No painkillers yet." He explained as he tilted his head back. She knew what to give him to take the edge off without interfering with his bipolar disorder drugs. He thought back to the first time he had met Monique. He had just undergone one of the worst instances of his life, an ambush attack by a rivaling mob. Multiple stab wounds to his chest and arms, scars from which he still had, and a gunshot to his leg that caused a slight limp that he was normally able to hide. Dr. Dering had saved his life more than once. When he came in a second time with similar injuries, though not as extreme, she began to question him about how a pawn shop owner ended up with such extensive injuries so often.

And so he had told her. How he did own a pawn shop, but that was just a cover. He had sworn her to secrecy, and trusted her above all others concerning The Family.
